DoGooderTV is a project of See3 Communications.
See3 is all about helping nonprofits tell their stories on the web. We
primarily use video and social media / websites to tell the stories. We
have been helping our clients use existing tools, such as YouTube and
the dozens of other video sharing sites and social networks. Some of
our clients kept telling us that they had a problem with these sites.
They were OK, but they worried about control of their brand, and
whether the audience and the surroundings were appropriate for their
messages.

So they decided to create DoGooder.tv,
where nonprofits can brand their videos to a specific audience that is
interested in making the world a better place. The idea is that any
person interested in non-profits and their body of work will see the
videos on DoGooderTV and they´ll be able to read more about the
organizations and their causes, inform themselves about volunteering
and donation opportunities, create a community around the issues they
care about and share their experiences and their efforts with other
like-minded individuals.

In the early months of the 2008 presidential campaign, the media had already winnowed the race to mostly five candidates and offered Americans relatively little information about their records or what they would do if elected, according to a comprehensive new study of the election coverage across the media.
The press also gave some candidates measurably more favorable coverage than others. (see link for entire report)

Youth, Identity, and Digital Media

As young people today grow up in a world
saturated with digital media, how does it affect their sense of self
and others? As they define and redefine their identities through
engagements with technology, what are the implications for their
experiences as learners, citizens, consumers, and family and community
members? This volume addresses the consequences of digital media use
for young people’s individual and social identities.

The contributors explore how young people use digital media to share
ideas and creativity and to participate in networks that are small and
large, local and global, intimate and anonymous. They look at the
emergence of new genres and forms, from SMS and instant messaging to
home pages, blogs, and social networking sites. They discuss such
topics as "girl power" online, the generational digital divide, young
people and mobile communication, and the appeal of the "digital
publics" of MySpace, considering whether these media offer young people
genuinely new forms of engagement, interaction, and communication.

It may have been true once that (as the famous
cartoon of the 1990s put it) "Nobody knows you're a dog on the
Internet," and that (as an MCI commercial of that era declared) on the
Internet there is no race, gender, or infirmity, but today, with the
development of web cams, digital photography, cell phone cameras,
streaming video, and social networking sites, this notion seems
quaintly idealistic. This volume takes up issues of race and ethnicity
in the new digital media landscape. The contributors address this
topic--still difficult to engage honestly, clearly, empathetically, and
with informed understanding in twenty-first century America--with the
goal of pushing consideration of a vexing but important subject from
margin to center.

Learning Race and Ethnicity explores the intersection of race
and ethnicity with post 9/11 politics, online hate-speech practices,
and digital youth and media cultures. It examines universal access and
the racial and ethnic digital divide from the perspective of digital
media learning and youth. The chapters treat such subjects as racial
identity in the computer-mediated public sphere, minority technology
innovators, new methods of music distribution, digital artist Judy
Baca's work with youth, Native American digital media literacy, and
minority youth technology access and the pervasiveness of online health
information.

In Theorizing Digital Cultural Heritage,
experts offer a critical and theoretical appraisal of the uses of
digital media by cultural heritage institutions. Previous discussions
of cultural heritage and digital technology have left the subject
largely unmapped in terms of critical theory; the essays in this volume
offer this long-missing perspective on the challenges of using digital
media in the research, preservation, management, interpretation, and
representation of cultural heritage. The contributors--scholars and
practitioners from a range of relevant disciplines--ground theory in
practice, considering how digital technology might be used to transform
institutional cultures, methods, and relationships with audiences. The
contributors examine the relationship between material and digital
objects in collections of art and indigenous artifacts; the

FMC Research

Members of the Future of Music Coalition are currently engaged in a
number of research projects. Though each project has a different objective,
each of them will lead us to a better understanding about the positions
of artists and musicians in the music/technology environment, and the
larger implications on citizens' rights.

False Premises, False Promises: A Quantitative History of Ownership Consolidation in the Radio Industry

The 2007 ICA Conference's theme was Creating Communication:
Content, Control, and Critique. Many interesting academic
contributions about this theme appeared in the Keynote Panels,
Theme Sessions, and many other sessions.

But the 2007 ICA Conference did not just feature academic
reflections. In three so-called grassroots discussion panels,
alternative voices from outside academia also animated the
conference theme. These panels produced interesting dialogues
between academia and the people that actually organize, realize,
and live the participatory and bottom-up processes that we
academics so eagerly analyze.

Now, practitioners' contributions from these panels are available
as an ebook entitled "Alternatives on media content, journalism,
and regulation." Edited by Seeta Peña Gangadharan, Benjamin De
Cleen and Nico Carpentier, and published by the University of Tartu
Press, this book brings together the fascinating stories of how
civil society intervenes (sometimes successfully, sometimes less
successfully) in the creation of alternative content, in the
organization of alternative journalism, and in the attempts to
influence the regulation that impacts upon the communicative
processes.
